4G LTE Connectivity for Retail, Pop-Up, and Point of Sale Applications

Retail connectivity requirements range from a single card reader in a market stall to a full EPOS, inventory management, digital signage, and CCTV system in a high-street unit. What all of these share is a common dependency: the internet connection must be reliable. A payment terminal that cannot connect costs sales and customer goodwill in real time.

4G as Primary Connectivity for Retail Kiosks and Markets

Pop-up retail, market trading, festival catering, and standalone kiosks in car parks and retail parks cannot easily connect to fixed broadband infrastructure. 4G is the natural primary connectivity solution for these applications – deployable anywhere with mobile coverage, no installation fees, and no minimum term on IoT SIM cards.

Card Payment Terminals

Modern card payment terminals communicate over IP. An integrated 4G router with a low-data IoT SIM card provides a dedicated, isolated connection for the payment terminal – separate from any general-purpose Wi-Fi and with guaranteed always-on connectivity. This is a more reliable solution than tethering the terminal to a mobile phone hotspot, which depends on the phone remaining charged and connected.

Digital Signage

Digital signage screens in shopping centres, service stations, and standalone retail units need a data connection to receive content updates. A low-bandwidth IoT SIM on a 4G router provides reliable content delivery without the cost of a full broadband line for what is essentially a low-data application.

How Much Data Does a Payment Terminal Use?

A card payment transaction consumes approximately 1-5 KB of data. A busy retail site processing 200 transactions per day uses less than 1 MB of data for payment traffic alone. An IoT SIM card with a modest data allowance is more than adequate for payment-only applications. Where the same router also supports CCTV or digital signage, a higher data allowance is appropriate.

4G as Broadband Backup for Fixed-Line Retail

For retail units with an existing fixed broadband connection, 4G provides critical failover capability. Payment terminals, EPOS systems, and inventory management cannot function without connectivity. A 4G router with an IoT SIM, configured to activate automatically when the fixed line fails, eliminates the trading interruption that a broadband outage would otherwise cause.

This WAN failover configuration is straightforward on modern 4G routers – the router monitors the fixed broadband connection and switches to 4G within seconds of detecting a failure, then switches back when fixed connectivity is restored. The process is transparent to the payment terminals and EPOS systems connected to the network.

Temporary and Event Retail

Christmas market stalls, food festivals, sporting events, and exhibition stands all create temporary retail environments that need a connectivity solution. Private IP SIMs for Retail CCTV and Remote Access

Retail units with CCTV systems that need to be monitored remotely, or with EPOS systems that are managed centrally by a head office, benefit from a private IP SIM card that provides a fixed, reachable address for the site router. This eliminates the need for DDNS and provides a secure, direct connection from the central management system to the individual site.

External Antennas: Do You Need One?

Every 4G and 5G router ships with stub antennas attached to the ports on the casing. In many installations these are perfectly adequate. In others – particularly inside metal-framed buildings, below ground level, or in rural areas far from the nearest mast – an external antenna can make a significant and measurable difference to both signal quality and sustained throughput.

Before purchasing an external antenna, we recommend working through a structured test process:

  1. Baseline test with supplied antennas in the intended location. Install the router where it will live in normal operation. Note the RSRP value from the router diagnostic page – this is a more reliable indicator than signal bars. Run a speed test and record the results.
  2. Try different positions within the same space. Cellular signal varies considerably within a single room. A window-mounted location can outperform a cabinet in the centre of the same space by 10-15 dB. Try several positions before concluding signal is poor.
  3. Test outdoors on a dry day. Take the router outside – clear of the building envelope – and run the same tests. Building fabric, particularly reinforced concrete, metal cladding, and low-emissivity glass, can attenuate signal by 20 dB or more. If outdoor results are substantially better, an externally-mounted antenna is the right solution.
  4. Test each network in turn. If you have a multi-network IoT SIM, lock the router to each available network and test each one. Coverage and performance vary significantly by network at any given location. EE frequently outperforms in rural areas; Three tends to be strongest in urban environments.
  5. Consider a directional antenna if signal is marginal. An omni-directional antenna captures signal from all directions but lacks gain. If you know the direction of the nearest mast, a directional or panel antenna aimed at the mast can provide 5-9 dBi additional gain over a standard stub – the equivalent of moving the router significantly closer to the mast.

Antenna Connection Note

Most 4G and 5G routers use SMA or TS9 connectors. Check your router specification before ordering an antenna and cable. For cable runs over five metres, use low-loss coaxial cable – standard RG58 introduces approximately 1.5 dB of loss per metre at LTE frequencies, which can negate the benefit of the antenna.
