The Truth About “Unlimited” UK SIMs
No mobile network in the UK currently offers a genuinely unlimited data SIM with no restrictions whatsoever. All “unlimited” consumer tariffs include a fair use policy (FUP) that permits the network to apply speed management (throttling) to customers consuming data at levels deemed excessive. The practical implication is that “unlimited” means unlimited in the sense that you will not be charged for extra data – but it does not mean unrestricted speed or throughput at all times. For IoT, M2M, and always-on business applications, an IoT M2M SIM card with a defined data allowance and no throttling policy is frequently a more reliable choice than a consumer unlimited tariff.

Three's unlimited tariffs include a fair use policy. For router and FWA use specifically, Three has in the past applied speed caps or throttling to SIM cards primarily used in routers rather than phones, particularly on consumer tariffs. For business and IoT applications, Three offers dedicated SIM tariffs with terms appropriate for router use.
When Three is the Right Network
Three is particularly strong for urban 5G applications where its spectrum advantage translates to higher speeds. For an office or business in a major UK city where Three has deployed dense 5G, the performance can be compelling. Three's 4G network is solid in urban and suburban areas but does not match EE's rural coverage depth.

Three holds spectrum in the 3.6 GHz band (the primary 5G band in the UK), the 700 MHz band (for wide-area 5G coverage), and significant 4G spectrum. This spectrum depth means Three can support higher device densities and higher peak speeds than networks with less spectrum, particularly in busy urban locations.
