4G Router for Hospitality and Remote Venues

4G routers for hotels, pubs, wedding venues, and remote hospitality sites. Reliable guest Wi-Fi, payment terminal connectivity, and EPOS backup using 4G LTE and multi-network IoT SIM cards.

4G Connectivity for Hotels, Pubs, Wedding Venues, and Remote Hospitality

The hospitality sector depends on connectivity for guest Wi-Fi, payment processing, EPOS, property management systems, and digital entertainment. In urban venues this is typically served by fixed broadband, but rural hotels, country house wedding venues, glamping resorts, and remote pubs face the same connectivity challenges as any rural business.

SimWise supplies 4G routers, multi-network IoT SIM cards, and external antennas for hospitality operators that need reliable connectivity where fixed broadband is unavailable or inadequate.

Guest Wi-Fi Over 4G

Guest Wi-Fi expectations are high. Hotel guests and wedding party attendees expect to stream video, make video calls, and post to social media without noticeable buffering. In a location with good 4G signal, this is entirely achievable with a 4G router and an appropriate data SIM. In a marginal signal location, an external antenna is the key to delivering acceptable performance.

Data consumption on guest Wi-Fi is substantially higher than for IoT or business applications. A wedding venue with 100 guests over a 12-hour event might consume 50-100 GB of data. The right SIM for this application is an IoT M2M SIM card with a large or pooled data allowance, rather than a consumer unlimited SIM with a fair use policy that may throttle high-usage sessions.

Fair Use Policies and High-Usage Events

Consumer unlimited data SIMs from EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three all carry fair use policies. For a hospitality application with many concurrent users, these policies can result in throttled speeds at exactly the moments when demand is highest. SimWise IoT SIM cards are designed for high-usage, always-on applications and do not carry the same fair use restrictions. See: EE Unlimited, Vodafone Unlimited, Three Unlimited – and why they may not be the right choice for hospitality.

Payment Terminal Resilience

A rural pub or hotel that loses its fixed broadband connection loses the ability to take card payments – a critical trading problem. A 4G router configured as a broadband backup ensures payment terminals remain operational even during a fixed line outage. The router monitors the fixed connection and activates 4G automatically when needed, with no manual intervention required. See also: 4G for retail and PoS.

Country House Venues and Wedding Facilities

A country house wedding venue needs connectivity for the ceremony, the reception, and the catering operation simultaneously. A 4G router with a high-capacity SIM serves the basic connectivity requirement. For larger venues, a second router for the catering team and payment terminals ensures that guest Wi-Fi congestion does not affect trading systems.

Remote Pubs and Country Hotels

Remote rural pubs and country hotels in areas without fibre broadband can use 4G as their primary internet connection. With a properly positioned external antenna, many rural hospitality businesses achieve speeds of 20-40 Mbps or better – sufficient for EPOS, property management software, digital entertainment, and guest Wi-Fi simultaneously.

External Antennas: Do You Need One?

Every 4G and 5G router ships with stub antennas attached to the ports on the casing. In many installations these are perfectly adequate. In others – particularly inside metal-framed buildings, below ground level, or in rural areas far from the nearest mast – an external antenna can make a significant and measurable difference to both signal quality and sustained throughput.

Before purchasing an external antenna, we recommend working through a structured test process:

  1. Baseline test with supplied antennas in the intended location. Install the router where it will live in normal operation. Note the RSRP value from the router diagnostic page – this is a more reliable indicator than signal bars. Run a speed test and record the results.
  2. Try different positions within the same space. Cellular signal varies considerably within a single room. A window-mounted location can outperform a cabinet in the centre of the same space by 10-15 dB. Try several positions before concluding signal is poor.
  3. Test outdoors on a dry day. Take the router outside – clear of the building envelope – and run the same tests. Building fabric, particularly reinforced concrete, metal cladding, and low-emissivity glass, can attenuate signal by 20 dB or more. If outdoor results are substantially better, an externally-mounted antenna is the right solution.
  4. Test each network in turn. If you have a multi-network IoT SIM, lock the router to each available network and test each one. Coverage and performance vary significantly by network at any given location. EE frequently outperforms in rural areas; Three tends to be strongest in urban environments.
  5. Consider a directional antenna if signal is marginal. An omni-directional antenna captures signal from all directions but lacks gain. If you know the direction of the nearest mast, a directional or panel antenna aimed at the mast can provide 5-9 dBi additional gain over a standard stub – the equivalent of moving the router significantly closer to the mast.

Antenna Connection Note

Most 4G and 5G routers use SMA or TS9 connectors. Check your router specification before ordering an antenna and cable. For cable runs over five metres, use low-loss coaxial cable – standard RG58 introduces approximately 1.5 dB of loss per metre at LTE frequencies, which can negate the benefit of the antenna. Speak to SimWise before specifying a long cable run. Browse our antenna range.
